Rose Gardening In Late Fall

The months of November and December can be an awkward time for many rosarians. The winter hibernation season has not yet begun even though the growing season is coming to an end. Some of us just don\’t know what to do with ourselves or our rose bushes during this period of time.

Because your bushes are not yet in hibernation they still require some attention from you. Water continues to be a prime need, so make sure that the soil around their roots continues to remain moist. You can give them a good soaking just make sure you don\’t over do it.

For your roses\’ winter survival requirements, water plays an important role and with roots that are properly hydrated, they will be protected when the cold weather arrives.

To discourage new growth, stop all pruning and deadheading activity. Last month is when you should have stopped applying organics and don\’t think about applying more fertilizer either. Your goal is to keep your roses healthy while, at the same time, encouraging them to begin the process of going into dormancy.

To combat the black spot, continue spraying at least once each month. Keep your eye out for spider mites as they\’re still active during late autumn. Spritz your blooms and foliage with water whenever you see signs of infestation. You also need to watch out for aphids because they\’re active now as well, so have a bottle of soapy water ready to send them away.

Pick off any diseased leaves and rake away any fallen leaves from your rose beds. This not only improves the appearance of your garden, it also removes any disease residue which may be still on the leaves.

Not only that, this would also be a good time for you to prepare new rose holes and beds for the growing season next year. They can mellow over the winter season and in the spring, they\’ll be ready to accept new bushes.

You can start piling mulch over your Color Magic, Signature, and more delicate varieties. For your hardier varieties, they can wait until next month. Our \”Winter Gardening\” article can provide you with mulching tips.

All season you\’ve worked hard just to keep your roses beautiful and healthy. Doing everything right could result to you being rewarded with waves of beautiful blooms. Even though your hard work is almost over for the year, during these important final months don\’t neglect your roses.
