Most homeowners automatically buy a fence when they are enclosing an outside space. With a large area to enclose however this is often quite a costly project.
A natural hedge provides an excellent alternative. A hedge is just as good as a fence for creating privacy , security and dealing with issues like pollution. Find suitable plants that grow well in your locality when looking for the ideal varieties to use for your particular project. If you would like some advice or inspiration, take a trip to your local garden centre or plant nursery. If you are unsure of your soil type, pick up a kit and check.
If you are going to use more unusual plants, do some research first. Do remember however that by using plants that are native, you can guarantee that they are going to thrive and grow successfully as they will be more resistant to common plant diseases and weather conditions.
As soon as you have established your soil type and chosen the plants you are going to use, you can begin to calculate the quantity of plants you need to carry out your project and your total costs.
You could want to create one whole hedge with the same type of plants. This will achieve an attractive, quite formal appearance, or you could mix it up a little for a more natural looking hedge. Check the average growth size, and work out the correct spacing for your new plants. The usual spacing would be from 2 to 3 feet apart.
It can be physically hard work planting a new hedge properly, but it is a straightforward enough job. Preparing the land correctly and digging the right sized holes is not something you can hurry. Usually, you should be placing plants in a hole or trench that is at least twice the size of the root balls on the new plants. Good preparation will give plants the best chance. Ensure you plant the hedge straight!
For the very best results and fast growth you should water the entire hedge regularly until established.
