Tips for Keeping Your Lawn in Top Shape

Nice grassy areas can really make a garden. Since the craze for pristine turf began in the seventeen hundreds with the ideas of C. Brown, England has shown a particular inclination towards having a proper lawn. The thing is, it can sometimes be difficult to keep things neat and tidy, or indeed alive. Should you be having problems, it\’s a good idea to know some basic tips.

One of the key ways to keep your lawn healthy is to make sure you\’re mowing it regularly during the spring and summer months, and that you\’re mowing it correctly. This is best done weekly, which might seem like a lot, but if you don\’t cut your grass whenever it\’s growing it can get out of hand. This doesn\’t mean that you should keep it as short as possible though. About four centimetres is a good length to maintain, as anything under two centimetres makes it easy for moss and weeds to grow through, while anything longer will allow it to get messy. For shady patches, or for gardens that take hammer from kids or animals, leave the grass a little longer, to make sure you don\’t kill it off by accident.

Next up it\’s a good idea to give everything the nutrients it requires. You can get this easily with good quality lawn feed. The best examples of this are granular fertilisers, as they release slowly and don\’t overwhelm the garden with macronutrients. These can also be applied and then left for longer without having to add more, meaning it\’s less labour intensive.

Obviously you also have to watch out for weeds. Not trimming too short will help a great deal with this, but it won\’t stop the odd things from popping through. In this event you risk messing up the lawn by pulling too much, so it\’s often better to get some weed killer, and use it carefully, as instructed, to pick out those problem areas.

Touching up your lawn is a good idea as well. Over time the odd patch might die out, and sowing another layer of grass seed means that you can keep the lawn looking fresh and full rather than raggedy. With all of these chores done you can get down to the important business of actually enjoying your time in the garden.

Save your grass with decking boards.
