Often times I\’m asked to write about flagpole and banner related topics. The content in this entry was composed to describe triband type standards. Many of such standards are used for purposes of display from (mostly) national flag poles. Many of today\’s nations fly these types of banners. A triband features three colors, hence \”tri-color,\” in a diagonal, horizontal or vertical arrangement.
The nation of Armenia flies such a flag for their national flag from their flag pole. Proportioned 1:2, this flag was first recognized officially in the nineties. A law indicating how to fly the flag from an Armenian flagpole, and its use was passed in 2006.
Diagonal tribands can be challenging to find flying from national flagpoles. Very often, the areas of such flags do not have equally sized bands. The flag of Congo is a good example. This standard was first flown from a Congolese flagpole in 1958, but then abandoned about one decade later. It was then again used in the nineties
Cameroon\’s triband flag is similar to certain other international flags attached to African flag poles. Like the Senegalese triband, the Cameroonian flag also features the Pan African colors in a vertical arrangement. A green vertical strip is located on the hoist side of the triband. The center strip is red and the strip located on the fly-end is yellow.
Columbia\’s national standard is a little unusual compared to other national banners. This triband displays three colors: yellow, blue and red. The yellow horizontal band is the largest of all three bands, since it occupies the top half (50%) of the triband. First hoisted on a Columbian flagpole in eighteen sixties, this triband is considered historical. The civil and the naval ensign feature two different emblems in the center.
Some of my online friends know that I am quite familiar with the latest trends in the flag and flagpole world. As people and generations move on in time, national flag designs can change as well. Tribands fly beautifully from national flag poles and have done a good job representing many countries throughout the world.
