Slate is a beautiful building material which is 100% natural and lends itself to elegant installations in and out of the home. Its color is varied and it will change depending on the lighting and weather conditions when used in the garden. A slate patio is a great way to use slate and enhance the look and usefulness of your garden space.
Here are our step-by-step instructions on building your own slate patio:
Step 1: Measure the Patio Area
Use a tape measure to set out the dimensions of the patio. Use string or rope together with wooden stakes to mark out the corners and boundary of the patio.
Step 2: Excavation
Shovel out the sod and dirt within the roped off section – you will need to go down approximately 6 inches.
Step 3: Gravel
Spread gravel to a depth of approximately 4 inches over the entire area within the roped off section. Tamp the gravel down so it is level and as tightly packed as you can make it. Consider using a power tamper if you have a large area to work.
Step 4: Apply Landscape Fabric
Spread landscaping fabric over the gravel which will serve to stop weeds growing through the installation. Even with gravel and a lay of slate, weeds will still find a way to emerge through gaps in the installed slate, but this will prevent that from happening. Cut the fabric to suit the area, and where there are overlaps you should ensure that they do so by at least 6 inches.
Step 5: Sand and Lumber
Place a 2×4 over the central part of the landscaping fabric and then pour sand over the area have the lumber standing up so it is 2 inches high you will know when you have applied enough sand when it is level with the top of the lumber (i.e. 2 inches).
Step 6: Remove Lumber and Treat Sand
Take out the lumber and fill in with sand as required. Take the lumber and use it to screed the sand after you have dampened it with a sprinkling of water.
Step 7: Dry Run Slate Layout
Arrange the slate pieces into a pattern for the patio do this as a dry run so you can measure how well pieces and colors work together within the overall design. Once you have a working pattern you are happy with, move to the next step.
Step 8: Install the Slate on the Bed
Take a piece of slate and lay it on the sand bed; use a rubber mallet to help pound the slate so it fits snugly and securely. Uses a level to make sure the slate is level and repeat the process with the next slate piece. Always check with the level so you are making an even walking surface.
Step 9: Fill in With Sand
Use more sand over the entire installation and sweep it with a stiff brush. Work the sand into the contact spaces between all of the slate pieces. Finally, sampan the sand with more water and ensure all of the crevices have been filled with sand. Sweep off the excess and prepare to enjoy your new slate patio.
